Our Hearts

“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.  – Joel 2:12-13(NIV)

God looks at our hearts; not the outward trappings we use to fool other people. God wants my heart broken so that He can pour out His grace, compassion, patience, and love.

My soldier may be in my heart, but God must HAVE my heart. When I offer my whole heart to God, He will treat it as a priceless treasure, and everything that is in my heart, including my soldier, is also held gently in His wonderful, gentle, loving hand.

God says in the book of Joel that He will not send calamity. That’s a promise I can trust in today. Anything that happens is under God’s control, and my soldier and I are both safe in His hands.

Whenever my heart feels heavy I will remember the words of this prophet and return to the LORD my God, for He is gracious and compassionate.

Lord Jesus, through the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit, please help me to act with a pure heart today.  Protect me from the evil one who tries constantly to turn my view inward and my heart black, and help me to focus on Your purity and love.  If my soldier is feeling heavy-hearted today, please comfort him and allow him to feel You presence, too.
